Constance "Connie" Olds, 81, of Harbor, died June 23, 2002, in a local care facility following a long illness. She was born May 3, 1921, in Canon City, Colo., to Charles and Ruby M. (Roberts) Davis. She lived in Colorado, Utah, Montana and California before her parents settled in Oregon in 1937. She worked along with the rest of her family trying to survive during the depression and post-depression era. She married Delmer Quick "Barbara Jo Del" Olds July 8, 1939, in Newberg and became a logger's wife. They moved throughout Oregon to be close to the "next patch of timber." In 1952 Del quit logging and opened a truck shop in Grants Pass. The truck shop evolved into A-1 Auto Wrecking, which they owned before selling it in 1975 and moving to Harbor. From 1939 to 1962, Mrs. Olds concentrated on homemaking and was busy raising four children. After the youngest graduated from high school, she started "The Cake Box," a bakery in Grants Pass. She subsequently obtained her Realtor's license and started The Real Estate Center in Grants Pass. After moving to Harbor, she started Harbor Crafts at the Port of Brookings Harbor. Mrs. Olds was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 33 years. She loved to be with her family and to fish for salmon and steelhead on the Chetco River. She also fished commercially with her husband in their "salty pup" but preferred the river. She was instrumental in establishing a place where seniors and the disabled could fish without having to walk a long distance. The nickname "Social Security Bar" still stands, her family said. Survivors are sons, Lloyd and his wife, Bonnie Olds, of Brookings; Robert and his wife, Marcia Olds, of Grants Pass; and Larry Olds of Brookings. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, who died May 7, 1998; her parents; sisters, Marion Beller, Dorothy MacLaughlin and Louise Jones; brother, Charles Lloyd Davis; stepson, Delbert (Roy) Olds; and an infant grandson. Family members and close friends are invited to a funeral service June 30 at 1 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings. Graveside services will be July 1 at 3 p.m. at Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens in Tillamook. Memorials are suggested to The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, 2106 Second St., Tillamook, OR 97141. Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel. |
