Charles W. Stanton, 73, of Brookings, was born July 26, 1938, to Wanda Butler Stanton and Charles A. Stanton in Battle Creek, Mich.

In 1956 he moved with his family to Bakersfield, Calif. He served in the National Guard during the Watts Riots.

He spent his entire career in the printing industry, starting with his apprenticeship at the local Bakersfield newspaper. He moved to Sacramento, Calif., where he worked at the Office of State Printing in various capacities, retiring as a supervisor after 30 years. He was a “people person” and enjoyed many hobbies that involved part time sales, including garage sales and gardening.

He married Audi Hill on Aug. 17, 1985, in Sacramento, where they lived until they moved to Brookings in 2000.

Here, he “enjoyed playing in the dirt,” becoming an active member of Curry County Master Gardeners. Charles served as their president for a year, newsletter editor for five years, and was instrumental in starting the Coastal Garden & Art Tour held annually. He was named “Master Gardener of the Year” for both 2010 and 2011.

Survivors include his wife, Audi, son Charles Blake Stanton, daughter Kelley Denise Stanton, son William Patrick Stanton; grandchildren Morgan Leigh and Charles Patrick of Bakersfield; stepdaughters and their families: Jennifer Blevins, Katie Kraynak and Robin Dowler, also of California; sisters Barbara Olds, Helen Ferguson, Bonnie Giltner; brother Jerry Holden; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to: Curry County Master Gardeners Association, P.O. Box 488, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at the Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Avenue, Brookings.

Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield, Calif., at a later date.

Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
