Charles JD “Charlie” Adams
Former Brookings resident Charles JD Adams, 72, passed away at 6:58 a.m. July 23, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka, Calif., after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

Charlie was born Oct. 19, 1940, in Atoka, Okla.

He moved to Humboldt County in 1958, and married Anna L. Ferrin in 1961. Together they had seven children.

Charlie supported his family by working in mills in a variety of positions throughout the years. He was seen as a man of strong character and good old-fashioned values. In his gruff and private way, he set an example of hard work, honesty and respect. He loved his family and he loved God. He openly admitted his wrongs and told it like it was. He was frugal, reliable and tidy. He wrote songs and poems, played guitar and sang, instilling this love of writing and music in his children and grandchildren. When Charlie spoke, people listened. If he read this notice, he would probably roll his eyes, shake his head and mutter under his breath that he didn’t know what all the fuss was about.

Survivors include his brother Allen “Pee Wee” Adams; sisters Wilma Taylor and Mary Horath; children C. Deland Adams, Laura Langston, Joseph D. Adams Sr., C. Allen Adams, Christine Uyehara, Kathy Smith and Amanda Adams; and former wife Anna Ferrin. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father Danial O. Adams; mother Hazel B. Harrington; sisters Ruby May Adams, Lillian Maxwell and Wanda Vickers; and brother James Adams.

A memorial service will be held to honor the life and legacy of this great man. Please join Charlie’s family and friends for a potluck from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Public Marina Wharfinger Building, No. 1, Marina Way, in Eureka.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Charlie’s name to the American Cancer Society (https://donate.cancer.org/index).

Submitted by the family.
