Charles J. Hansen

Charles J.Hansen, 86, Brookings, died Oct. 28, 2000.

He was born April 19, 1914, in Oakland, Calif., where he grew up.

He married Theresa Dragoni, also of Oakland, in 1938.

They made their home in California, Washington, and Minnesota respectively, until they moved to Oregon.

He was employed at various jobs during his youth. During World War II he worked as a crew leader and foreman building military ships.

After the war, he became a rancher in Southwest Washington, where they lived until|his younger son became ill and they moved back to Oakland.

He was employed by Del Monte Corp. as a warehouseman and later in plant security for 25 years until he retired.

He and his wife then moved to a farm on the shores of Lake Minerva, Minn. When she became ill, they moved to Brookings. She died in 1986.

In September 1995, he married Juliet (Traun) Hansen in Hayti, S.D. They moved to Brookings in 1995.

Mr. Hansen enjoyed freshwater fishing, being in rural settings, working with his tractor, cutting firewood, and taking long walks.

After moving to Brookings, he regularly worked out at The Fitness Center, belonged to the Walkers and Talkers Group, Senior Centers in Brookings, Gold Beach, and Port Orford, and attended informational meetings at the Senior Centers.

His hobbies were taking long walks around Brookings, picking up cans and bottles to recycle as well as to clean the area. He made many special friends along his self-appointed route.

He was seen often at the library, where he read The Wall Street Journal and borrowed books. Often, he read a book a week. He also enjoyed having meals at McDonald's, where he met friends and where he was joined by a small group who called themselves, "Charlie's Angels."

Survivors are his wife; son and daughter-in-law William and Sandra Hansen, Fremont, Calif.; daughter Jean Kowalski, Colombus, Neb.; brother Leslie Ena, Oakland, Calif..

Also surviving are three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 47 years, his son Thomas, a grandson, a brother and his sister.

At Mr. Hansens request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Condolences will be received at his home.

His family requests that any memorials or remembrances be given to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlins Brookings Mortuary and Crematory.
