Billy Gene Cunningham
Oct. 31, 1921-May 19, 2014
Billy Gene Cunningham, 92, of Brookings, died May 19, 2014, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.
He was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Chanute, Kansas, to Neva and Joe Cunningham.
Billy graduated from Gresham High School in Gresham, and went to work in broadcast radio. He received additional radio training in the U.S. Navy and worked in Aberdeen, Washington, Las Vegas, San Jose, California and Sacramento, California before returning to Oregon to raise pinot noir grapes.
He met and married his beloved Florence in 1952, and together as active Jehovah’s Witnesses, they raised their blended family.
After 10 years farming and making great friends in Lacomb, they arrived in Brookings in 2000, so he could finally go fishing. They treasured the many close friendships they made in Brookings. He and Flo were living at Sea View Senior Living when he fell asleep in death at age 92.
One of the highlights of his time in Brookings was when a huge group of good friends got together and hosted a surprise 50th anniversary “quick-build” front yard landscaping, including a waterfall, stream and bridge as well as a “wonder stump” in a single day! His cheery smile and calm “Well” response to almost any situation will be missed until we meet again.
Survivors include daughters Linda Henderson of Lewiston, Idaho, Jeryl Schooler of Brookings, Janet Rackham of Pollock Pines, California; son Mark Cunningham of Placerville, California. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1208 Ransom Ave., Brookings.
