Brookings resident Ken Charles Weaver, 66, Gerlach Lane, was taken into custody Monday for allegedly raping his 3-year-old step-granddaughter.

Weaver was charged with contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor, first-degree rape, unlawful sexual penetration and first-degree sexual abuse, said Detective Dave Gardiner.

Gardiner said he believes Weavers bail was set at approximately $4 million.

The abuse allegedly occurred on or about the first week of February, he said.

The victims mother reported the abuse and Weaver was arrested when he returned from an out-of-town trip, he said.

Gardiner said there is no indication of prior abuse between Weaver and the victim, but he said more often than not a perpetrator has committed a similar crime before and never been caught.

Weaver does not have a criminal record.

This is the second case of child rape Gardiner has investigated in the last two months.

Jimmy Cooke, 19, of Harbor, was arrested March 8 for the alleged sexual abuse of his 3-year-old half-sister.

While on a trip to Medford, the victims grandmother observed suspicious behavior and took the girl to the emergency room, Gardiner said.

There, doctors determined that sexual abuse had occurred. The case was turned over to Gardiner from Josephine County authorities, he said.

The alleged abuse occurred in the first part of January, Gardiner said. Cooke was arrested at the Brookings Police Department after he came to see Gardiner.

Both Weaver and Cooke are being held at the Curry County Jail.
