GASQUET A wanted Medford man who allegedly assaulted a detective and eluded police at a Winchuck River Road home Jan. 17 was captured Thursday in Gasquet.
Franklin Uz Furgerson, 32, was arrested after a three-hour manhunt. He was found hiding in a shed behind an apartment complex in Gasquet after stealing a car in the Crescent City Harbor area on Wednesday, according to the Del Norte County Sheriffs Department.
A warrant for Furgersons arrest was issued in Medford for assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and felony harassment, Del Norte County Sheriff Jim Maready said.
Those charges stem from an incident where Furgerson is suspected of firing a gun from his car into another car.
Similar charges are pending in Eugene against Furgerson, Maready said.
Furgerson arrived in Harbor earlier this month, where he is suspected in an assault with a deadly weapon and drug charges, said Brookings Police Officer Sam Dotson.
On Jan. 17, Furgerson was detained by police at a house on Winchuck River Road. The officers were investigating several burglaries that happened in the area.
Furgerson suddenly pulled away from an officer, shoved him with a forearm and fled on foot, said Brookings Detective John Bishop
Officers chased Furgerson. Backup was called and Sgt. Chris Wallace responded with K-9 dog Hojee. They were unable to find Furgerson.
On Wednesday, members of the the Del Norte County Sheriffs Department Drug Task Force, who had been alerted that Furgerson may be in their county, found the fugitive in the Crescent City Harbor area.
Furgerson escaped officers in a car stolen from Harbor View Grotto restaurant. Teresa Lange, 27, Central Point, was with Furgerson. She was caught and charged with accessory after the fact, said Del Norte County Sheriffs Lt. Tony Lewis.
The California Highway Patrol stopped Furgerson at 9:30 Wednesday night in Gasquet. When officers approached the vehicle, Furgerson sped away and a chase ensued.
California Highway Patrol officers found the car abandoned not far away. They flattened the tires in case he tried to use it again.
A manhunt began and Furgerson was later found in the shed at 12:30 a.m., He offered no resistance, Lewis said.
Furgerson he will be charged in Del Norte County with evading a police officer, auto theft and receiving stolen property, Lewis said.
Curry County District Attorney Charlie Steak said he expects the charges in Curry County to involve assault and controlled substance charges.
Furgerson and Lange are currently in the Del Norte County Jail.
