|Volunteers needed for light display|

Even though Christmas is far off and little more than a distant glimmer in most children’s eyes, organizers are already preparing for the annual Nature’s Coastal Holiday light display in Azalea Park.
The event, which lights the dark December nights starting on Dec. 1, is looking for volunteers to help install the lights and businesses to help sponsor the event.
Volunteers will install lights from Nov. 18 to 30, turning thousands of strands of lights into topiaries and displays.
In addition to volunteers, event chairman Bryan Tillung said the committee is looking for donations.
“The lights do need to be replaced now and then,” Tillung said. “Age and vandalism are problems and deer step on light strings causing damage.”
Through a PayPal link on the event’s Facebook page, donations can be made in a variety of denominations. Recurring sponsors pay $50 and first time sponsors for the event pay $100. The extra cost, according to Tillung, is to pay for the new display.
Entrance to Nature’s Coastal Holiday costs $1 for adults; children 12 years old and younger enter for free. There will be a stand with hot and cold cider and cookies provided for free.
The display has been an annual event since 1997, when Keith Pepper sought to bring a holiday lights display to Brookings after seeing similar events in other towns. Starting with only 25,000 lights, the event has steadily grown to include almost a half million lights.
The event has been led by a variety of community groups and leaders over the years, with it now being run by its own committee.
