Brookings and Harbor volunteer firefighters quickly extinguished two separate blazes Monday morning, keeping flames from spreading to nearby structures.

The causes of the fires were unknown and both were still under investigation on Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters responding to the 3 a.m. report of a commercial building on fire on King Street in Brookings arrived to find a recreational vehicle and a carport completely involved in flames. At one point a transformer on a nearby power pole exploded, said Harbor Fire Chief John Brazil.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire and limit damage to an attached two-story building that houses an office and living quarters, Brazil said.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, he said. Two Harbor fire engines and one Brookings engine responded to the call, he said.

The fire may have started in a fifth-wheel trailer parked in the carport, but an exact cause had not been determined yet, Brazil said.

At 9 a.m., Harbor firefighters responded to a fire reported in a storage unit next to Little Bay Motors on Highway 101 in Harbor.

“The fire started in one unit and then hit the ceiling and started to spread,” Brazil said. “We opened up the roof to vent the fire and we were able to knock it down with water before it could reach the other units.”

Several adjacent storage units suffered minor water damage, he said.

“We always approach storage unit fires very carefully because we don’t know what might be inside,” Brazil said.

An adjacent storage unit did contain ammunition, he said.
