Several tenants were expected to move into their new apartments today (Sept. 22) at Pelicans Perch, Brookings latest affordable housing project for seniors.
This is a beautiful place. I think Im going to like it, said Alice Stotenburg, who toured the facility Friday during a grand opening celebration.
Stotenburg has lived in Brookings for 50 years, the last 25 years at a house four miles up the Chetco River Road.
Now Ill be closer to everything: the senior center, shopping, the library, she said.
The 24-unit senior housing complex is located on Moore Street just off Arnold Lane. Construction was completed only weeks ago, said Bonnie Bell, who manages Pelicans Perch with her husband, Gordon.
There are only two or three apartments available for rent, Bonnie said.
Were at 95 percent capacity, she said. Tenants include people from Arizona, Wyoming and California.
The facility, built for approximately $3 million, was designed for senior citizens 62 and older who are capable of living independently, said Laura Coomes, a consultant for Timberlake Development, which oversaw its construction.
Pelicans Perch is not an assisted living facility, Coomes said.
However South Coast Senior Services will be providing services on an as-needed basis for seniors who may need them for example, while recuperating from an illness in order to extend their ability to live independently longer, she said.
Such services will include Meals-On-Wheels, assistance with housekeeping, bathing and dressing, and a referral service to other community service providers, such as health-care professionals, who may be needed at times, Coomes said.
South Coast Business Employment Corporation, Senior Services, which administers programs provided through the Area Agency on Aging, will be on site at Pelicans Perch on a regular basis to assist as necessary, Coomes said.
The centers one-bedroom units are 742 square feet, while the two-bedroom units have 1,018 square feet and include two baths.
