The eighth-grade leadership class at Azalea Middle School displays the flag it sponsored for Veterans Day and the plaques they received for doing so. Vietnam veteran Steve Dryden, back right, was on hand to receive the $35 check, which will benefit the nonprofit group Veterans Helping Veterans.
More than 300 American flags will line Chetco Avenue in Brookings and Highway 101 in Harbor on Monday in honor of Veterans Day.
Businesses for a Better Brookings and Vietnam Veterans of America, which started the flag program, is looking for more people to sponsor the flags, said organizer Vicki Nuss.
Recently, she said, a new flag sponsor wrote in a letter to The Pilot, We had out-of-town company from larger areas, one group over July 4th and another over Labor Day. The comments were the same...What a wonderful feeling, what a wonderful community feeling this flag display gives.
The organizations are selling sponsorships for $35 per flag, per year. The annual sponsorship includes the initial purchase of the flag, poles and hardware, and posting of the flags on nine holidays a year (weather permitting).
The holidays the flags are posted are Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
Checks for sponsorship may be mailed to B4BB, P.O. Box 1500, Brookings, OR 97415.
For information on sponsoring a flag call Vikki Nuss at (541) 412-0244 or Judi Anderson at (541) 469-2862.
Proceeds benefit Brookings downtown projects and Veterans helping Veterans programs.
