The Brookings Skate Park Committee recently accepted a bid from a renown skatepark design firm to build one here, and has directed staff to prepare a contract.
Russ Johnson, chairman of the committee and owner of Sessions surf and skateboard shop, said the Dreamland Skateparks has a reputation as one of the best, if not the best skate park design team in the country.
In a letter addressed to the city of Brookings, Mark Red Scott said he and his associates feel privileged to be considered for the skate park design and construction project.
This is an exciting time to be involved with a project that both provides a place for kids to skate and furthers development of our sport, Scott said. Im a very active skateboarder and have been such for over 15 years. I feel very strongly that a well-built skateboard facility is a definite key to a lifetime of fun in the sport, he said.
Scott said he has been fortunate to be involved in designing six nationally recognized skateboard parks and looked forward to creating a first class facility for Brookings.
We are confident that we have the design, construction and application expertise to make this project an overwhelming success, he said.
Scott listed five Oregon skate parks the team has built, including the Burnside Project in Portland and skate parks in Lincoln City, Newberg, Newport and Aumsville.
He gave a breakdown of costs for construction of a 10,000-square-foot skate park, including materials, concrete, crushed rock, concrete pump truck, rental of construction equipment, labor and design costs.
While the estimated cost for this project is $123,303, the actual figure may be much lower, he said.
That depends, he added, on whether or not some of the materials are donated and whether the crew will have access to city equipment.
The latter factor alone would reduce the costs by almost $17,000, he said.
Brookings City Manager Leroy Blodgett said if the city could raise half the cost of the skate park in cash and in-kind pledges, it should be fairly easy to get a grant for the other half.
The skate park committee agreed the cost of the Brookings park would likely be less than $100,000.
Johnson said the skate park committee should actively recruit skateboarders to be on the committee now that there is a concrete offer on the table.
You know, this is starting to become exciting, he said. Nothing happens for a long time and then Hey, were going to have a skate park here.
