The graduation ceremony for the 2001 class of Brookings-Harbor High School is scheduled for 2 p.m Saturday at Elmer Bankus Memorial Field.
Approximately 127 students are expected to take part in the graduation, said Principal Floyd Strandberg.
It will be held outside, rain or shine, Strandberg said. The seniors wanted to do it that way because the location offers unlimited observation.
The football stands and surrounding area can hold at least 1,200 guests, while the school gym can only hold about 800, he said.
If the ceremony was held in the gym, each student would only be allowed to invite five guests, he said.
The seniors told me theyd rather be outside and get wet and have all their friends and family there, Strandberg said.
Members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Chetco River will lead the students onto the field, present the flags and later lead the students out of the stadium.
Former professional football quarterback and motivational speaker Tom Flick will speak during the ceremony.
Flick was a Los Angeles Rams quarterback for seven years, voted most valuable player in the PAC 10 Conference and was quarterback at the University of Washington.
Two students recommended that Strandberg invite Flick to speak after the two heard him speak at another event, Strandberg said.
The schools Sea Breeze jazz ensemble will sing the National Anthem and two other songs.
Band director Mike Shepherd and the high school band will perform the Allied March.
Parents of seniors plan to do several special things during the ceremony, including decorating the podium where the seniors will speak and later accept their diplomas.
The parents will also hand a flower to each student after they receive their diploma and set up a shelter tent area where light refreshments will be served and the graduates can take pictures with family and friends.
The class valedictorian and salutatorians will each deliver speeches.
For the first time, the seniors who earned Certificates of Initial Mastery, 27 of them, will be recognized during the ceremony.
Twenty seven students is pretty good compared to other schools, Strandberg said.
