Scott Graves of Harbor has been named the new editor of the Curry Coastal Pilot by Publisher Charles Kocher.
Graves, 32, comes to the job after 18 months on the news staff of the Daily Triplicate in Crescent City, a sister publication. At The Triplicate, he worked both as a reporter and assistant editor.
Im pleased that we are gaining someone already familiar with the community and the community newspaper philosophy of Western Communications, our parent company, said Kocher.
Graves said he is excited by the challenges and rewards of heading up The Pilots news staff.
Im looking forward to being involved in the community and, hopefully, taking on the role of facilitator in community issues.
Former editor Jerry Teague retired last week after eight years in the position. Graves started on Monday.
A journalism graduate of California State University at Northridge, Graves has worked as a reporter or correspondent for several California newspapers since 1989.
In addition to the Triplicate, those publications include the Los Angeles Daily News, the Los Angeles Times Ventura County Edition, Thousand Oaks News Chronicle, and Ventura County Star newspaper.
He was selected as team reporter for the Ventura County Star in 1999 and received a community award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
He has written numerous freelance articles for agriculture, consumer and travel magazines. And is an avid photographer.
In addition, he has worked in public relations and copywriting for a vitamin company, an international agriculture company and a Christian publishing company.
Graves wife, Jacque Graves, is manager of the technical support division of CompanionLink Software.
After visiting Jacques parents almost every summer and winter for five years, the couple decided to stay for good. They moved to Harbor from Ventura, Calif., in February 1999.
They have been reading The Pilot for nearly five years.
We finally decided to escape the fast lane and enjoy a better quality of life, Graves said. Were also looking forward to starting a family here.
