The Brookings City Council has approved a contract with Brookings-Harbor School District 17-C for a school resource officer.
In the past the city has provided a school resource officer for the school district, City Manager Leroy Blodgett told the council.
The program has been very successful and we will continue with that program for the 2000-01 school year, Blodgett said. This year Officer Curt Fox is assigned to that duty.
Though the city has provided the service for the school district in the past, Blodgett said, there has not been a formal agreement to do so.
Blodgett said a proposed agreement has been prepared and reviewed by the school superintendent, police chief and himself.
The agreement will formally set in place the same services that have been provided over the past years, he said.
Last year the school district paid the city $31,500 for the services, Blodgett said.
The actual cost of salary and benefits for the school resource officer during the school year is $37,000. The school superintendent and I have agreed that $37,000 should be the fee paid by the district to the city.
Councilor Frances Johns made the motion to approve the agreement, saying, I think its excellent to have this all down in black and white.
