The Brookings boy who fell from a high rock into Macklyn Cove last week remains in fair condition at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Bryce Bond, 13, has been hospitalized since a seven-hour surgical session at Doernbecher on Nov. 3. His mother, LeeAnna Bond, said Tuesday her son is still “very” heavily medicated because of pain from a shattered ankle and broken leg.
“He’s still hanging in there,” she said. “He hasn’t been able to do much walking or moving around.” Doctors were hoping to give the boy some physical therapy Friday, she said. Bryce still needs major reconstructive surgery on his ankle, his mother said, but that is probably two to three weeks away. “He has so much bone loss that they are trying to decide how to fix it,” LeeAnna Bond said. Bryce’s ankle currently is being held in place by a brace-type wrapping secured with pins through his calf and foot, she said. She hopes her son can return to Brookings for a period of time before further surgery. LeeAnna, Bryce’s father Jessie, and Bryce’s siblings stayed for a couple of nights in Portland’s Ronald McDonald House. Since the other children have come back to Curry County, the parents are sleeping in Bryce’s room. “It’s kind of exhausting,” LeeAnna said. “You get a little sleep, but we want to stay with him.” Because the family has no medical insurance, three donation funds have been established in Brookings. People may donate in a jar at Reflections Beauty Salon, 434 Redwood St., where LeeAnna works; at any Chetco Federal Credit Union outlet by informing a teller they want to contribute to the Bryce Bond fund; or on Julie Miller Fitzhugh’s Facebook page. To contribute via Facebook, click on Fitzhugh’s “wall” link and then click on the “give” link. During a phone conversation Friday, LeeAnna emphasized how grateful the family is for the outpouring of support from the community – both emotional and financial. “People have been amazing,” she said. “It has helped out so much and we thank everyone who has helped. “There are a lot of people we don’t even know who have been tremendous.” The fall, estimated at 85 feet, occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 as Bryce, brother Nate, 10, and friends Dominick Rogers, 11, and John Thompson, 13, walked west across the top of the big rock at Mill Beach. Bryce led the group and slipped off the northeast face, landing partly on rocks and partly in the water. In addition to his broken leg and ankle, he suffered a broken wrist, slight skull fracture, a scrape under his lip and a cut on his chin. He was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City by Cal-Ore Life-Flight air ambulance before flying to Portland about midnight, with surgery performed from 4 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 3. The boy’s mother called his rescue “amazing.” It included efforts of Brookings Fire and Rescue, Brookings Police Department, Cal-Ore Life Flight, Curry County Sheriff’s Office and its Search and Rescue team.
