Reckless tank driver fined $8,000

This vintage tank was delivered to Highway 101 in Pistol River in December.

Jeffrey Bryan Glossop pleaded guilty of reckless driving and criminal mischief charges Jan. 29 after the vintage battle tank he was driving slipped gears and rolled backward off a road near Pistol River, across Highway 101 and through a guardrail last November.

The 58-year-old Gold Beach man was delivering a 1969 Chieftain battle tank to a nearby resident’s house on the back of a truck when he decided the vehicle wouldn’t make it up the steep hill with the tank on board. So Glossop unloaded the tank and tried to drive up the road when he lost control of the military vehicle.

He tried again, but the tank again slipped out of gear and rolled backward into another guardrail, down an embankment and into some trees. He has no experience driving tanks, Gold Beach police noted last year.

No one was injured in the incident.

Glossop was sentenced to 12 months deferred probation, fined $750 and ordered to pay $7,932.35 in restitution. He was also ordered not to drive battle tanks on public highways.
