Healthy snacks – granola bars, fruit snacks, graham crackers, water as well as tissues and hand sanitizer are all items that shoppers at Grocery Outlet can purchase this week for Kalmiopsis Elementary School students.
The Azalea/Kalmiopsis Parent Teacher Organization is partnering with Grocery Outlet and asking community members to donate these items for students who may be in need of a healthy snack.
“We just wanted to expand Stuff the Bus, to include healthy snacks,” Grocery Outlet co-owner Lori Panter said.
Stuff the Bus is a coordinated effort by local businesses and volunteers to provide Brookings-Harbor School District students with school supplies.
When shoppers at Grocery Outlet check out this week, checkers will ask them if they are interested in participating in the campaign. If shoppers are, they can select an item, which will be at the register, purchase it, and then put it in one of the Dollar Dog buses on Saturday, or in a barrel the remainder of the week.
The project starts today (Oct. 13) and ends next Saturday, Oct. 20.
“It’s definitely utilized in the schools and appreciated by kids, teachers, and staff,” Azalea/Kalmiopsis PTO member Lorie Botnen said.
Today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a pumpkin decorating contest at Grocery Outlet as well.
Grocery Outlet will provide the pumpkins, and the PTO will provide the paint. While parents shop, PTO members will supervise the children.
This is the third year that Grocery Outlet and the PTO have partnered on these projects.
