A 22-year-old Smith River  man was arrested Saturday near Eugene after he led Oregon State Police on a high-speed chase and eluded them south of Brookings two days earlier.

Eduardo Ramos was taken into custody by OSP about 9  p.m. Saturday when a trooper stopped the car in which he was riding and recognized Ramos as the subject of Thursday’s chase.

Trooper Cale Day stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Alvaro Aguilar Contreras, 26, for  speeding on Interstate 5 near milepost 187. During the stop, he identified Ramos from a photograph.

Ramos was arrested and lodged at Lane County Jail on an outstanding parole violation in Curry County, OSP spokesman Gregg Hastings said. But he was released Sunday due to jail overcrowding, according to Hastings.

Ramos will appear in Curry County Circuit Court, Hastings said. A spokeswoman for the Curry County District Attorney’s office said no date had been set as of Tuesday.

The Curry County incident began at 10:06 p.m. Thursday when OSP Trooper Jess Oliver attempted to stop a white 1993 Jeep Cherokee with California license plates after seeing it going 104 miles per hour on Highway 101 at milepost 362 near Brookings, Hastings said.

“The Jeep’s driver failed to yield and attempted to elude the trooper recklessly southbound at speeds between 60 and 90 mph,” Hastings wrote in a news release.

He said the Jeep slowed shortly after entering California near Smith River and the driver, later identified as Ramos, fled on foot near Sunset By the Sea Trailer Park, Hastings said. He added that the Jeep continued over an embankment and into a field, where it stopped.

Oliver chased Ramos on foot through the trailer park and back toward Highway 101, Hastings said. Oliver then ended the chase and waited for officers from California Highway Patrol, Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, Curry County Sheriff’s Office and a K-9 team from Brookings Police Department. A search failed to find Ramos.

In addition to the probation violation, Ramos also faces a charge of felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, Hastings said.

He has ties to Gold Beach, Brookings and Smith River, according to OSP, and is no stranger to the Curry County judicial system.

Ramos was indicted by a Gold Beach grand jury on a dozen different methampetamine charges in 2009. He was sentenced to 23 months in prison after accepting a plea bargain in Curry County Circuit Court.

Ramos, then 19, entered a no contest plea to delivering a substantial quantity of meth, District Attorney Everett Dial said. Ramos also helped a co-defendant manufacture the drug, Dial added.
