Johnson complained of back pain, was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The truck driver, Sean Russell, 19, was not injured in the accident. His blood alcohol concentration was .18 percent. The legal level in Oregon is .08. Russell was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence and reckless driving and lodged in the Curry County Jail.
According to a Brookings Police investigation, Johnson was in his patrol car parked on the north shoulder of Highway 101 just south of the Chetco River Bridge at 1:26 a.m. Russell was driving a 1987 Dodge pick up northbound in the right lane of travel at 63 mph when the truck drifted onto the shoulder and struck Johnson’s patrol car.
The truck then hit the guardrail and came to rest about a 100 yards in front of the patrol car.
Harbor Fire Department responded and assisted at the scene, and a Cal-Ore Life Flight ambulance crew transported Johnson to the hospital, where he was released at 7 a.m. Thursday.
