The body of Jennifer Evert, 34, a Crescent City woman reported missing more than three weeks ago, was found Wednesday evening in the wilderness 20 miles east of Brookings, authorities said.
Evert appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a press release from the Curry County Sherif’s Department.
Mountain bikers in the Hazel Camp Road area called authorities to report a vehicle parked on a spur road off of Forest Service Road 1407
The description of the vehicle, a silver Chevy Tahoe, matched that of Evert’s vehicle reported when she went missing around May 20.
Because it the possibility it was Evert’s truck, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Police Department contacted the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, and the three agencies drove out to investigate.
Del Norte sheriff’s Detective Ed Fleshman found the remains of Evert’s body about 30 yards away from the Tahoe. The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, authorities said.
Evidence collected at the scene indicated that Evert had shot herself. The Curry County District Attorney’s Office was notified, as was the Curry County Medical Examiner. The remains were transported to Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.
Evert’s obituary is on Page 8A of today’s Curry Coastal Pilot.
