|LACK OF INTEREST SPELLS DOOM FOR YOUTH CENTER|

The Brookings-Harbor Youth Association, 630 Chetco Ave., will close its doors Dec. 31 unless it can get a board of directors.
Heather Weckler, the association director, has been running it for four years with few volunteers. Three people, including Weckler, are on the board, but Weckler is currently the only active board member.
I dont want to quit, but you get to a point where its time to give up, Weckler said. It takes a lot of work and there are not enough people or interest.
Weckler said that in the last few months, she has tried to encourage people to join the board.
The association needs a board of five people. The board is the base of the center and requires a substantial time commitment, Weckler said.
Board members assist with organizing association programs, fund raising and general association operations among other duties.
We need something like this association in the community, Weckler said. All the statistics show this is a positive thing.
In addition to board members, volunteers are needed to staff the association during after-school hours. During the school year, the doors have been open from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
