Curry County Search and Rescue Team members use ropes and a Stokes litter to bring injured hiker up a hill near Rainbow Rock.
A Brookings man whom bystanders thought fell 200 feet from a hillside to the beach near Rainbow Rock Condominiums Friday evening was released after being treated for a sprained ankle at Curry General Hospital.
Rescue officials learned that Bruce Whetsel, 57, had been walking along the beach when he decided to climb up the hill toward Highway 101, north of Brookings. He slipped and injured his ankle.
Residents at the nearby condominium complex called 911 to report the incident.
Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team and the Brookings Fire Department responded to retrieve Whetsel from the hillside. His golden retriever, which was not hurt, was taken by Pennies for Pooches for safekeeping.
Rescuers used an elaborate rope system to retrieve Whetsel; he was then transported to Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach.
