INMATE CAPTURED AFTER THIRD ESCAPE ATTEMPT

GOLD BEACH After his third escape attempt from the Curry County Jail in less than six months, Shawn Maughs, 28, Brookings, was scheduled to be transported to the Clackamas County State Department of Corrections Tuesday afternoon.

Maughs will later be placed in an Oregon penitentiary where he will serve 20 years. He pled guilty Dec. 7 to three counts of second-degree kidnapping, one count of second-degree escape and one count of first-degree criminal mischief, said District Attorney-Elect Charlie Steak.

On Sunday, at approximately 8 p.m., Sheriffs deputies Ed Stephens and Don Hickcox discovered Maughs missing from his isolation cell at the Curry County Jail.

The Sheriffs department issued information about the escape and a photograph of Maughs to area law enforcement agencies. Gold Beach Police Chief Bob Rector showed the photo to employees at McKays Market. On his way out of the store, he showed the picture to citizen Nathan Williams. Williams told Rector he had seen Maughs near a phone booth at the Chevron Gas Station.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday Rector, Deputy Walter Scherbarth and Sgt. John Sevey apprehended Maughs at the gas station without incident, deputies said.

Im very appreciative of the effort the Gold Beach Police Department put out, said Sheriffs Capt. Mark Metcalf.

He said the details of Maughs escape are not being released for security reasons, but he said they do know the escape route, did a security audit and have made changes to the jail because of the escape.

This is a good example of old technology and design construction that needs attention, Metcalf said.

Maughs has since been charged with second-degree escape and will be arraigned on that charge early next year, Steak said.
