Bill McMillan, who was fired as CEO of Curry Health Network in 2012, is under investigation at his current hospital administrative job in Forks, Wash.
The board of Forks Community Hospital placed its chief executive officer on paid leave Nov. 21, pending an investigation. The board declined to elaborate on the reasons behind the decision, according to board chairwoman Daisy Anderson.
“It’s a personnel issue, so I can’t say anything more than that,” Anderson told the Peninsula Daily News.
There is no timetable as to when or if McMillan would return and he will continue to be paid during his leave, Anderson told the newspaper.
McMillan took over as the hospital’s administrator Dec. 3, 2012, with an annual salary of $176,010. He succeeded a CEO who retired.
Forks Community Hospital is a 20-bed facility that had a $23.2 million budget for 2013. With 195 employees, the hospital is the city’s largest single employer.
Prior to Forks, McMillan was CEO for the Curry Health District from 2009 to June 2012. The district operates Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach, Curry Medical Center in Brookings and Curry Family Medical in Port Orford. McMillan was paid a salary of $149,000.
McMillan told the Peninsula Daily News in January he left the Curry Health District position after a conflict with a director of the district’s board.
In June, 2012, McMillan was fired by the Curry Health District board.
“The board of directors lost confidence that McMillan was capable of supervising the financial condition and the staff. He was put on administrative leave because he had a 60-day notice in his contract,” Curry Health District board Chairman Dugie Freeman said at that time.
The health district was told by its auditors in October 2011 that it had lost a substantial amount of money during the past two fiscal years, which could endanger the district’s ability to stay in business.
The audit showed that the hospital district reported an operating loss of $1,132,000 in 2011 fiscal year, although CFO Mark Sayler noted that with the property tax collected by the district, that was reduced to $936,000. The loss in Fiscal Year 2010 was $552,000.
The district had operating income of $466,000 in fiscal year 2009.
