CRAB FISHERMEN, BUYERS STILL NEGOTIATING PRICES

Crab fishermen at the Port of Brookings Harbor have yet to head out to sea to begin placing their bait pots.

Bernie Lindley, president of the Fishermen's Marketing Association for the port, said port representatives have been reviewing offers from crab buyers on what price they will pay per pound for crab.

As of Tuesday night, a reasonable price had not been offered by the buyers.

Although crab season officially began Dec. 1, the fishermen are reluctant to start bringing in their catch until an agreement is made on a fair price.

Since their biggest catches are almost always at the beginning of the season, settling for a low starting price may jeopardize their livelihood for the whole year.

And until an agreement is made, the fishermen and their boats will remain in the harbor.
