Brookings Police Officer Sam Dotson was honored this week for 30 years of service to the city.

Police Chief Ken Lewis presented Dotson with a certificate of appreciation for the service Dotson has provided from Nov. 1, 1970 to Nov. 1, 2000.

Dotsons received the award on his 56th birthday. He took a few minutes to accept the certificate, along with a lighted crystal plaque engraved with the city emblem and a reproduction of his police badge.

Then he went back out on patrol.

Dotsons son, Donny, who joined the Brookings police force a few years ago, told The Pilot the reason he wanted to be a police officer was because of his fathers example.

Ive always been very proud of him and the job he does, he said.

Sam Dotson has lived most of his life in Brookings. I graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School, where my mother was a school teacher for 30-some years.

Besides Donny, Dotson and his wife, Rita, have a daughter, Jamie, 21. Both Rita and Jamie work at Curry Good Samaritan Center.

After high school, Dotson went to Oregon College of Education, but didnt get a degree.

I worked for the Forest Service, worked in the mill for a time, and then went into law enforcement. Ive never regretted it.

As the city starts planning for its 50th birthday celebration, Dotson said he has become more aware of the past and old Brookings.

During the election, a candidate distributed a 1950s shot of Brookings main street, he said. Driving right down the middle of it was my fathers 1950 Chevrolet.

Before the highway was built, he recalled, the only way north was by way of Carpenterville Road, which was an extremely winding road. Some of the corners were so tight the school buses couldnt go around them without backing up a little, he said.
