Candidates for city, county, state and federal offices will square off in a series of League of Women Voters forums next week starting on Tuesday.
A special public forum on the proposed Brookings-Harbor School District bond measure will be hosted by the Curry Coastal Pilot at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Best Western Brookings Inn conference center.
Both school district officials and members of the citizens committee that helped prepare the $14 million property tax measure will be available to explain the measure and answer questions about it.
The League of Women Voters Brookings forum will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Best Western Brookings Inn conference room on U.S. Highway 101.
Due to the large number of candidates running for county and city positions, the Brookings forum will not include state candidates.
Brookings residents are urged to also attend the Gold Beach forum on Wednesday, which include state candidates. The Gold Beach forum will be held at 7 p.m. in the Gold Beach High School multi-purpose room.
Candidates who accepted the leagues invitation to attend the Brookings forum are as followed:
County Commissioner Position No. 2 - Commissioner Lloyd Olds (D), Marilyn Schafer (R) and Pete DiRusso (Independent)
County Commissioner Position No. 3 - Commissioner Bill Roberts (R), Lucie La Bonte (D)
Mayor of Brookings - Mayor Bob Hagbom, Victoria Nuss
Brookings City Council Position No. 1 - Rick Dentino, Don Nuss
Brookings City Council Position No. 2 - Councilor Larry Curry, Fred Hummel, Tim Patterson
Candidates who have accepted the leagues invitation are:
U.S. Representative, 4th District - Rep. Peter DeFazio (D) John Lindsey (R)
State Senator, 24th District - Ken Messerle (R) (Roger McCorkle (D) is unable to attend due to a conflicting engagement)
State Representative, 48th District - Barbara Dodrill (D) (Wayne Krieger (R) is unable to attend due to a conflicting engagement)
All the candidates running for Curry County commissioner positions No. 2 and No. 3 will be attending the Gold Beach forum.
The final forum will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Port Orford City Hall at 7 p.m. and will include all the county commissioner candidates.
State candidates accepting the leagues invitation are:

State Representative, 48th District - Wayne Krieger ( R) (Barbara Dodrill (D) is unable to attend due to a conflicting engagement.)
City council candidates for Port Orford are:
Emily Francona, Jim Campbell, Carl Eskelson. (Candidate David Darnell is unable to attend.)
Candidates will each give an opening statement, followed by written, rather than oral, questions.
The audience will be given index cards for questions which will be collected by league hostesses and brought to the moderator throughout the forum.
Responses to the questions, as well as the opening speeches, will be timed.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization of women and men whose purpose is to promote political responsibility through active and informed participation of citizens in government.
The league does not support or oppose political parties or candidates for any office. Membership is open to all citizens of voting age.
