Brookings resident Joyce Marie Betties, 73, was struck and killed by a car when she walked across Chetco Avenue at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon near Chetco Lane.
The driver of the vehicle, Wayne Eugene Welbourn, of Gold Beach, was not injured in the crash, according to Brookings Police Sgt. Terry Murray. Welbourn was driving a 2013 Huundai Santa Fe north on Chetco Avenue and when he struck Betties.
Paramedics responding to the scene found Betties unresponsive and began CPR. She was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Murray said.
Welbourn remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
An accident reconstruction expert from the Oregon State Police arrived at the scene later that afternoon to assist with the investigation, Murray said. Traffic was reduced to one lane for about an hour.
Any one with information about the accident is asked to call Murray or Det. Tyler McCourt at 541-469-3118.
Betties, who could often be seen walking up and down Chetco Avenue and surrounding streets, had just left the Chetco Activity Center when she was killed, said center executive director Janice Scanlon.
“We’re getting a lot of phone calls because she was well liked here at the center,” Scanlon said.
She said Betties had a habit of crossing the street at that location and people often expressed their concern about Betties’ safety.
“They’d ask me, ‘Can’t you do something about Joyce?’”
Betties visited the center nearly every day and other people would often buy lunch for her.
“She was never down, always happy,” Scanlon said. “She was always telling people, ‘Have a happy time’.”
