A man was killed and two others injured in a two-car crash on the Hunter Creek Bridge just south of Gold Beach at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Rodney Dean Henderson, 62, of Brookings, was killed when his 2009 Mazda Miata struck the west side of the highway curb and careened sideways into the path of a northbound Jeep Liberty driven by Antonio Moore, 54, of North Bend. His wife, Laurie Moore, also 54, was a passenger in that vehicle.
The three were transported to Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach where Henderson died shortly after his arrival. The Moores received minor injuries and were treated and released from the hospital, a spokesman said.
Andrews said the roadway was wet from rain, all three involved were wearing seat belts, and there was no indication that alcohol was involved.
“It’s very tight through there,” said Gold Beach Police Chief Dixon Andrews. “We never thought we’d have a fatal in Gold Beach, but there’s no shoulder, it was a dark and rainy night. You just drift for a second – one moment’s inattention; an accident out there’s going to be high-speed. His car was pulverized.”
Cal-Ore Ambulance and the Gold Beach Fire Department provided medical assistance on scene, and Gold Beach and Oregon State police departments aided the Curry County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
