Kaylee Marie Strain was born eight days early, but right on time for the new year.

Strain is the first baby born in Curry County in the year 2001. She was born Jan. 1 at 9:10 p.m. to Russell and Denise Strain of Brookings.

Her original due date was Jan. 8. She weighed six pounds, seven ounces and was 20 inches long.

We feel good. We have holiday children, Denise said.

The Strains daughter Megan was born on May Day, 1996. This is the last child the couple plans to have. We planned on having two, she said.

Having Kaylee on New Years Day was a surprise, as was her gender.

We didnt want to find out, we wanted it to be a surprise, Denise said.

It wasnt a surprise to big sister Megan.

She told everyone we were going to have a girl. She wanted a sister, Denise said. Everyones excited that shes finally here, she added.

The maternal grandparents are Russell Suiter and Rhonda Coy, Brookings.

The paternal grandparents are Lee and Dixie Strain, Brookings.

Maternal great-grandparents are Ray and Dawn Suiter, Salem; Agness Kerttula, Smith River. The paternal great-grandparents are Tine and Rosie Strain, Gold Beach; Jess Sharp, Sweetholm.
