The second part of dredge operations are under way in the channel at the Port of Brookings Harbor. A dredge barge from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will spend the next seven or eight days extracting larger cobble that is washed down river and shoals up in the harbor, according to Port Manager Ted Fitzgerald. The work will deepen the channel, making it easier for commercial fishing boats to navigate their way to sea. Extracted cobble will be taken to an EPA-approved disposal site offshore.
