Kites won’t be the only thing soaring through the skies during this weekend’s festivities in Brookings.

The Brookings Flying Club will again hold its Flying Days, where people can hop aboard a four-passenger Cessna 172 for an aerial tour of the city.

“We have lots of fun,” said Ross Duncan, a retired pilot and member of the flying club. “If you like airplanes, and if you like sunshine, if you like talking about airplanes and if you like food and if you like flying, it’s a real fun day for you.”

The annual event is run in conjunction with the Southern Oregon Kite Festival and raises funds for a scholarship for college-bound students pursuing a career as a pilot, mechanic, weather, dispatch or other aviation-oriented future.

The suggested donation price for the all-you-can-eat pancake, scrambled eggs and bacon breakfast is $6.50; the cost to take a flight is $20 per person.

Breakfast begins at 8 a.m.; flights will begin taking off at 10 or 11 a.m., weather permitting.

Four airplanes, piloted by local aviators who donate their time and fuel, will take off from the Brookings Airport on Parkview Drive, head north and west over the ocean, south and over the Port of Brookings Harbor Kite Field and back to the airport.

Flights last from 12 to 15 minutes, Duncan said.

A free shuttle will be available at the east end of the port property near the Harbor Sanitation District and offer rides to and from the airport. For those wishing to drive, ample parking is available at the airport.

Last year, the event attracted about 200 people, Duncan said.

While many were taking in the sights from the air, others admired the planes exhibited by the Brookings Model Airplane Club. That club is now associated with the flying club.
