Brookings-Harbor residents are invited to the Chetco Activity Center to participate in a free social day program designed for people being cared for at home and who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.
The Time Out program, hosted each Monday, is funded in part by a grant from the Older Americans Act. The respite program is free for people 60 years and older with a family member providing for their care. There is a minimal charge to participate in this program if the client lives in a licensed care facility.
A major goal of the Time Out Adult Day Program is to help adults who need supervision to remain active in the community and reside outside of institutions for as long as possible, according to NiCole Rodgers, Time Out director, who works with a team of volunteers.
Participants take part in a time of recreation, socialization and a free meal. Snacks are served and interactive pursuits are offered. Activities include games, bingo, music, and arts and crafts.
Another goal of this program is to give often-exhausted caregivers some time to themselves to work, take care of their households or shop for groceries while providing a break from their caregiver duties, Rodgers said.
For the family care giver, this one day each week offers quiet time to enjoy reading, walks on the beach or to run errands. They may relax, knowing their loved one is safe and cared for by Time Out’s staff and volunteers, Rodgers said.
Rodgers and her volunteers understand it can be uncomfortable visiting an unfamiliar place and spend the day with unfamiliar people. That is why, she said, the program emphasizes taking the time to personally greet and get to know each participant and their caregivers.
Individual attention is combined with numerous activities to encourage laughter and bonding.
For more than 17 years, The Chetco Activity Center’s Time Out program has provided a safe and welcoming place for participants to have fun while their caregivers enjoy some personal time for themselves, Rodgers said.
