Roat (Michael S. Fox) sneaks up on a terrified Susy (Victoria Weller) in the thriller “Wait Until Dark.” The Pilot / Jef Hatch
The Chetco Pelican Players presents the chilling Broadway thriller, “Wait Until Dark,” by Frederick Knott, in time for Halloween.
The production opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings.
This tense stage classic is directed by veteran theater actor and director Howard Patterson and features one of the strongest casts ever assembled here, according to a Chetco Pelican Players’ press release. Victoria Weller stars as Susy Hendrix, demure wife of photographer Sam Hendrix (Ralph Dickey).
Susy, who has been recently blinded in an accident, is suddenly targeted in her small, two-room basement apartment by three determined criminals: Roat (Michael S. Fox), Mike (Steven Scruggs), and Carlino (Tommy Jones), who believe that something valuable of theirs has mistakenly fallen into her hands and they will stop at nothing to get it back.
The three felons invent all manner of twisted stories to try to coax it from her, but niceties inevitably become nasty and things get rough.
How can a blind woman protect herself from two con men and a vicious killer when she can’t see at all? Could it be with a little help from the naughty schoolgirl upstairs (Holly Carr)? The real answer is ... no one can see anything when the lights go out.
Reviewers have called this edge-of-your-seat masterpiece of suspense “The best Hitchcock thriller that Hitchcock never made.” The play was made into a very successful film in 1967, starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna, Jack Weston and Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students, and are available from Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supplies and Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts in Brookings, New Wave Video in Harbor, and at the door beginning 45 minutes before curtain time.
