Reaching for the halfway mark

Members of the community play bingo Saturday to raise funds for Relay for Life. The Pilot/Bill Schlichting
The annual Relay for Life in Brookings-Harbor, which benefits  the American Cancer Society, is closing in on the halfway mark of its goal of raising $46,000.

According to Rhonda Gardenheir, Relay for Life chairwoman, the benefit has raised more than $19,000 since late January when the fundraising began.

“We are we ahead of where we were last year,” Gardenheir said. Corporate sponsors are now starting to come in.

Currently there are 16 teams raising funds in the community. Among the fundraising events was a bingo night hosted by the Katelyn’s Krew team. The Saturday event raised $398.

Katelyn’s Krew is named in memory of Katelyn Wallace, a 17-year-old who fell victim to cancer in April 2008. The team consists of mainly high school students and members of the Brookings Police Department, which includes Chief Chris Wallace and teacher Molly Wallace, Katelyn’s parents.

The night included games with different bingo patterns, the first forming the letter “K” for Katelyn. There were also raffle drawings and a bake sale.

More fundraisers are planned before the Relay for Life event and will be announced.

Relay for Life will take place on July 8 and 9, at the Brookings-Harbor High School football field. The teams will take turns carrying a baton around the track through the night. The first lap will be taken by cancer survivors. The event will also have a luminaria ceremony, candles in bags lighting along the inside of the track, honoring those who have battled cancer.

It is not too late to sign up teams, Gardenheir said. People interested in forming a team may contact Gardenheir at 541-661-2317.
