Excitement is building for five princesses as the time draws near for tonight’s (April 7) crowning of the 2011 Azalea Festival Queen.

The pageant is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Brookings Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Ave.

The princesses – Brianne Dodgen, Liz Lindley, Ashley Juarez, Emilee Bottoms and Meredith Horel – have been preparing for the pageant for weeks, practicing singing, dancing, speaking, walking and curtsying.

The pageant includes the princesses modeling day wear, and formal wear, responding to a question with a short speech and presenting a variety of talents.

The judges, all from out of town, will begin the day by meeting the princesses at breakfast, followed by individual interviews and a review of an essay submitted by each contender.

The judges will be using a judge’s worksheet to arrive at a score for each princess with possible scores of 10 points for street attire, 25 points for talent performance, 20 points for the morning interview, 10 points for evening gown appearance including the curtsy, and 10 points for the essay.

Each princess will be escorted by a uniformed member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Ashley Diane Lueckfeld, the 2010 Azalea Festival Queen, will crown the new queen.

The Azalea Festival Scholarship Pageant committee that works with the young women is presided over by Pageant Director Alice Farmer and includes Rose Gabrielson, Clar Byers, Charlie Kocher, Melody Bond, Kelli Ryan, Yvette Bruce, Heidi Moore, Julie Fitzhugh and Virginia Riddle.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, and may be purchased from the princesses or at the door.
