Harbor resident Jessie Goergen will compete in the KSHR-FM Texaco Country Showdown Finals at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 in Coos Bay after winning the KPOD Texaco Country Showdown competition in Crescent City in July.
Jessie Goergen, who was 2010 Oregon State Fair talent winner, performed her own concert at the State Fair in Salem earlier this month. She also won the KPOD Texaco Country Showdown, giving her the chance to compete in the state finals in Coos Bay. Submitted photo
“I’m really excited for it, and hoping for a win,” Goergen said. “My family and friends are going to be there, so I’m really excited to perform for all my friends and family.”
Goergen will sing “All Jacked Up” by Gretchen Wilson, and her own original song “Too Broken to Fix.” She recently put her original song on iTunes.
The event will be held at the Mill Casino Hotel and RV Park, and is open to the public.
Tickets will be sold at the door or in advance at the Kokwel Gift Shop at the Mill.
“It was kind of a spur of the moment decision,” Goergen said of entering the competition.
A family friend picked up an application, and turned it in for her.
“I got really into it, and it just happened,” she said. “From there on, it just led me down this road, and I’m really glad I did it.”
Goergen will compete against at least seven singers for the $1,000 prize and the chance to advance to the Western Regional Finals in November.
Before a performance, Goergen said she usually tries to be alone to get into the zone. She said she also makes sure she’s focused and prepared.
“The more preparation I have, the less room for error.”
While performing she said she thinks about the message of the song, and tries to connect with the audience.
“Competing in this showdown is a great opportunity, and I feel really lucky to be there. It’s kind of just another step for me to achieve my dream,” Goergen said.
Her dream: being a professional singer.
