The Southern Oregon Kite Festival has invited more than 30 national and international, award-winning kite fliers and kite makers to the Port of Brookings-Harbor to showcase their talents Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17.
The event will take place on the Kite Field along Boat Basin Road. Parking will be available near the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce office on Lower Harbor Road. Shuttle service will be available between the parking lot and the Kite Field. Those attending this free event should bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the show.
Several kite-flying teams will be returning to this 19th annual event. All shapes and sizes of kites will be featured.
The Bay Area Sundowners will be flying four stacks of hyper-kites in synchronization, each stack with a dozen kites.
For this year’s festival, the iQuad team will be performing a brand-new six-person routine to “The Raiders March,” with their specialized Revolution quad-line kites.
Dancing man Al Washington and his grandson, Aaron, will be on hand as will 16-year old rising star Nathan Ostavar from Ashland. Ostavar began flying in 2000 when he was introduced to kite-flying at the Brookings festival and will be showcasing his routines.
Returning champion Ron Despojado, who has been dubbed “The ultimate showman,” will return to entertain the spectators as he performs both individually and as part of Team Too Much Fun.
David and Susan Gomberg travel internationally with their huge “show kites.” Rod and Cindy Thrall are known for their giant Peter Lynn Teddy Bear, as well as their Jordan Airform kites and huge ground display. Ron Gibian’s kites have won awards on five continents.
Free kite-building workshops are offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.
Food will be available for sale at the Kite Field both days and the Harbor Fire Volunteers will host its pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Harbor Fire Department on Benham Lane, 98069 W. Benham Lane.
