Approximately 30 women participated in the annual Homemakers Holiday workshops Saturday at Chetco Senior Center.

Several workshops were held during the day including classes about propagating plants taught by Jerry Holcomb, making Christmas snowflakes taught by Shelley Ross, making veggie and herb wreaths taught by Betty Sine and decorating sugar eggs taught by Margo Hanscam.

One of the more popular courses was a cooking demonstration by Don Tilton, which ended with people sampling the dish he prepared.

A course taught by Shirley Rufener about working with polymer clay drew a large crowd in the afternoon.

Other courses included origami and making paper envelopes.

During the luncheon that included cold-cuts and cheese sandwiches and desserts, Bette Moore gave a presentation on the Character Education Program at Azalea Middle School.

Moore talked about how the program is designed to develop a moral foundation among middle school-aged children.

A projection was used to explain the core character traits that are being conveyed to the students. These include respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, tolerance, caring, courage, justice and fairness, civic virtue and citizenship and self awareness.

The program is funded by a grant. Moore is working with Darrell Erb to organize the program, she said.

Following the keynote speech, workshop organizer Barbara Clelland asked the audience to spread the word so next year we can have a full house.

She also thanked Vangie Andreason. She was a big help getting this together today, Clelland said.

The annual Homemakers Holiday is sponsored by Oregon Family and Community Education. Proceeds are to go toward enclosing the Brookings swimming pool.
