A group of 40 children circled Kalmiopsis Primary School Friday to raise funds for Missionettes, Royal Rangers and other activities they participate in at Lighthouse Assembly of God.

The riders rode around the school building for two hours while officials Linda Hadley and Dione Alto counted laps. Riders either collected a flat amount from family and friends who agreed to pledge, or they were awarded a pledged amount for each lap, said Marie Coleman, Missionettes and bike-a-thon coordinator.

It is not known how much money was raised by the 24 Missionettes and 16 Royal Rangers because the children are not expected to turn in their pledges until tonight (Oct. 17), Coleman said.

Participants are asked to raise about $150. The money is used to pay for manuals, uniforms and related activities with the Assembly of God scouting group. Money is also used for incentive awards for those who raise the most funds, she said.

This is either the seventh or eighth year the church has had this fundraiser, as near as Coleman could recollect. She said the event provides a means of giving the children a way to work for their participation.

When they earn the money, they feel like they are doing something, Coleman said.

Royal Rangers is for boys and Missionettes is for girls. Both are for children age 3 through high school age.

The Christian scouting group offers Bible study, games and other activities for children both locally and out of town.

Anyone interested in participating in either program may contact Coleman at (541) 469-5712.

Missionettes and Royal Rangers meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lighthouse Assembly of God, 15803 Highway 101, Harbor.

The program also is offered at Calvary Assembly of God. Call (541) 469-2631 for information.
