It wasn’t the most successful of fundraisers, but last weekend’s Bruin Bash auction did raise a little more than $5,000 for the 2011 Safe and Sober Graduation Party.
The tally compares with previous auctions raising between $10,000 and $12,000, said Darla Moore, co-chair of the Safe and Sober Graduation Party planning committee. This year the community did not donate as many auction items as in the past and, because of terrible weather, Moore said, not as many people showed up for the event.
With seven weeks remaining until the graduation party, “People can still donate gift certificates and prizes for the party,” Moore said, adding that “the kids are going to have a good time no matter what.”
The graduation party, which has traditionally been at Wild River Pizza the night after graduation, is an all-volunteer effort to provide the graduates with a safe place to party. The event, which lasts all night, includes games, prizes, food and more.
“I can’t stress enough that it is a community effort,” Moore said.
Planning continues for the event. The next party planning committee meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, in the Brookings-Harbor High School library, 625 Pioneer Road, Brookings.
