GOLD BEACH – Stephanie La Torre, Keegan Krieger and Natalie Vincent were the winners of the Curry County Fair talent competition Saturday afternoon at the Event Center on the Beach.
La Torre, of Brookings, was the adult winner; Krieger, of Gold Beach, was the youth winner; and Vincent, of Sixes, was winner of the children’s division. All three will represent Curry County in the Oregon State Fair on Sunday, Sept. 4, in Salem.
The first-place winners of the Curry talent competition were selected from among 10 competitors in the adult division, seven youth and two children. La Torre sang “I’m a Woman,” Keegan performed “A Broken Wing” and Vincent presented “Our Song,” by Taylor Swift. All three sang their songs with recorded accompaniment.
Coming in second place in the adult division were Tim and Dylan Vila of Gold Beach who sang “Hey,” By Leeland. The two accompanied themselves on guitar and harmonica. Ronnie Fairchild of Brookings came in third place for her performance of the Dixie Chicks’ song “There’s Your Trouble.”
In the youth division, David Vincent of Sixes performed “Chicken Fried,” by the Zac Brown Band, on vocals and guitar. JJ Jackson of Gold Beach sang “Soul Sister” for the third-place trophy.
Hannah Hodge, of Brookings, performed a baton-twirling act to the “Mickey Mouse Club March,” to win the second-place trophy. Hodge was the only non-singing contender.
Siobhan Vila was the mistress of ceremonies at this year’s talent competition, which took place on a metal stage set up beside the wooden stage, which was not used this year. The audience sat on benches provided by the fairgrounds or on lawn chairs, or stood through the 90-minute outdoor show during a warm day that was cooled only by an occasional breeze.
Judges scored each contest on stage presence, performance quality and audience interaction.
Contestants in the adult division who did not place were Shalynn Doan of Brookings, Michael T. Simmons of Gold Beach, Rudy Glen Spence of Harbor, John Clute of Port Orford, Joanie McNerlin of Port Orford, Paulette Kuykendall of Gold Beach and Larry Stauth of Port Orford.
In the youth division, contestants were Dorothy Shull of Brookings, Charlie Melton of Gold Beach, Tyler Norton of Ophir and Cameron Kuykendall of Gold Beach, and Andrew Simmons of Brookings.
