Last year the group grew, and this year, because organizers Cheryl “Pixie” Grimes and Sarah Wentz are expecting an even larger crowd, they have decided to turn the third-annual Zombie Walk into a charity event.
“The charity that we walk for is Stand Up 2 Cancer,” Grimes said. “If anyone wants to help out, but can’t join us, they can get on the site (http://www.standup2cancer) and browse the teams for Team Zombies Attacking Cancer.
“We are the only zombie team there.”
The goal for this year is to raise $1,000.
“We know that it isn’t a huge goal, but our first charity year, we’re not going to try for more until we’re more established,” Grimes said.
Donation cans for the charity have been placed at Main Street Skate, Love Me 2 Times, The Market Place, Sac’s Thrift Avenue, Flying Gull and Myrtlewood Lounge.
In addition, those who would like to participate, either as a zombie or a volunteer victim of a zombie attack, are asked to bring a non-perishable food items to be donated to the Community Helpers Food Bank in Brookings.
The event will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Stout Park on Oak Street in Brookings.
“Come a bit early if you need help with makeup,” Grimes said.
Zombies will walk from Stout Park down Oak Street and Chetco Avenue to the Bankus Fountain where they will gather for a group picture. Then they will return to the park.
