The Curry County WIC Clinic will be hosting a Mothers Breastfeeding Group from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, May 18, at the Curry County Human Services building, 517 Railroad St., Brookings.
Mothers who are pregnant, nursing or have nursing experience that they would like to share are invited to come and have refreshments and socialize with other mothers. Aa raffle for nursing mothers will be held.
Breastfeeding is known to reduce the incidence of infection, asthma and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Exclusive breastfeeding is also associated with lower rated of breast and ovarian cancer. Breastfeeding is also more economical for the family budget and does not require preparation, WIC officials said.
The WIC program serves pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age five. Last year, WIC served 53 percent of all pregnant women in the county. For more information, call the WIC program and 888-811-1513.
