Theater patrons attending the annual PACKY Awards gala will find something different at the Chetco Playhouse – new seats.
Crews worked during the weekend to remove the old gold-colored seats and replace them with wider seats. The goal was to have the job done in time for the Chetco Pelican Players’ ceremony, which will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21.
The gala will celebrate 23 years of bringing live theater to the Brookings-Harbor community. The PACKY (Performing Arts Center Krazy Year) Awards are given annually to honor the last year’s accomplishments.
Though the Players had to make schedule changes during the 2011 season, they still managed to produce a varied season of entertainment, which featured “Kitchen Witches,” “Fuddy Meers,” “Nunsensations,” “Treasure Island,” “39 Steps,” and “The Little Prince Christmas Show.”
Ballots were sent out to all members and season ticket holders to vote for their favorite actor and actress for supporting actor, character, bit player, costumes, sets, best director and overall production.
Special Awards are given for outstanding service in the last year. The Steve Stevens Award (for service above and beyond the call of duty) The Bill Schlichting Award for Journalism, and the Moran Family Award.
During the celebration, there will also be a look back on other events that happened during the year, including the final “Evening with Elmo Williams,” which featured his film “High Noon”; The annual haunted house; and “Radio Daze,” a look at the golden age of radio.
There will also be special performances from some of the last year’s productions and always a few surprises thrown in, as well the introduction of the new board of directors by new President Mary-Ann Trailor.
Food is a big part of the evening and the players spare no expense to feed themselves. A banquet will be served by Claire Willard. Champagne and sparkling cider will also be available.
People who wish to attend do not have to be a member of the Chetco Pelican Players. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children from the general public, and free for children who were involved in a production last year.
Tickets are available at Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts and at the door. Dress is classy.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Chetco Playhouse is at 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings.
