Duo celebrates CD release with string of shows in Oregon
Singer songwriters Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh have joined together to record and tour as The Barn Birds.
The duo will be at the Pistol River Friendship Hall on Saturday, Aug. 31. The 8 p.m. show is a presentation of The Pistol River Concert Association. Tickets are $15 and are available at Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings and at Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. Tickets may also be reserved online at http://www.pistolriver.com or by calling 541-247-2848.
The two met as teachers at a song academy in Oregon, according to a press release. Enamored with Kokesh’s fiddle playing and singing, Byrd invited her to play with him that weekend at the Sisters Folk Festival. They played two encores, and the festival audience voted them the “Encore Performer” to return the following year.
The duo toured the Pacific Northwest and Midwest, and came back to Oregon to make their first recordings in a barn in Sisters. Byrd and Kokesh had to stop recording when the birds in the walls erupted in song. The Barn Birds were born.
“The Barn Birds is about love. It’s about missing love, finding love, letting go of love, and celebrating love,” Byrd said. “Even more than that, it’s about the love of our community. Most of the songs are cowrites with people I love.”
