Friday, March 22

Star of the Sea Catholic Church will be having a fish fry in observance of Lent. This is the final fish fry of the holiday. Fish, prepared as desired, will be served from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the church, 820 Old County Road, Brookings. The cost is $7.50 for adults, $4 for children 5-12 and free for children younger than 5. Everyone is welcome.

Kalmiopsis Audubon Society will have a birding field trip around the Port of Brookings Harbor. Meet in the parking lot at the corner of Alder Street and Spruce Drive across from the Chetco Community Public Library to car pool. No birding experience is required and experts are welcome to share their knowledge. Binoculars are recommended. A No Name-Calling Week fundraiser will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fred Meyer entrance, 325 Fifth St., Brookings, sponsored by TheCitizensWhoCare.org. Orange wrist bands will be available for donations. The event will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 24.

The Brookings-Harbor Shoe Exchange will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Brookings Elks Lodge lower level, 800 Elk Drive. Shoes of different styles are available in all sizes. All are in good shape and are available for free. Donations of shoes in any condition are accepted at shoe bins at Ray’s Food Place in Brookings, Shop Smart in Harbor, Smith River School and Julindra Recycling in Crescent City. The annual spring Whale Watching Week has “Whale Spoken Here” volunteers posted at coastal headlands to help spot the California gray whales from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Saturday, March 30. Sites are at Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint and Harris Beach State Park in Brookings and Brother Jonathan Point in Crescent City.

The annual Redwood Wild River Run kicks off at 11 a.m. along Douglas Park Drive and Howland Hill Road in Hiouchi.

The Friends of Unitarian Universalists will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Evergreen Federal Bank meeting room, 850 Chetco Ave., Brookings. The program will be a discussion of GMO foods. Rev. Rosa Redtail will create a Wiccan ritual to honor spring (ostara) from 1 to 4 p.m. at 549A Chetco Ave. (upstairs from Gypsies). Participants are asked to bring a hard-boiled egg decorated with symbols of how they would like to grow or create in their lives this season. The cost is $10.

Monday, March 25

The Azalea Quilt Guild meets in the Driftwood Estates Mobile Home Park community room, 16063 Driftwood Lane, Harbor. Fun day begins at 10 a.m. Members will be using a variety of patterns to put together half-square triangles. This will be followed by a potluck. People are asked to bring a dish to share. Evening activities begin with social time at 6 followed by the meeting at 6:30. Anyone interested in entering a quilt during the Azalea Festival quilt show are invited to complete their applications and have their quilts photographed either during fun day or the meeting. Tuesday, March 26

A free showing of the movie “Bully” will be at Redwood Theater, 621 Chetco Ave., Brookings. The PG-13 version will be shown at 10:15 a.m. and the G version will be at 11:10. Those wearing an orange wristband obtained from a weekend fundraiser at Fred Meyer will be eligible for raffle drawings.

A vigil will be at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of Brookings-Harbor High School, 625 Pioneer Road, Brookings, to commemorate the life of Dorothy Shull, who would be a senior this year.

The Pregnancy Care Center of Brookings, located at 344 Pacific Ave., offers free and confidential pregnancy tests, education on all pregnancy options, parenting classes, baby and maternity items and more. CC’s Cancer Resource Center offers free counseling and resource options daily to women addressing cancer issues. The resource center is inside CC’s Upscale Resale Clothing Store in the Brookings-Harbor Shopping Center in Harbor. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The resource center also hosts Tea at Ten group meetings every Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. For information, call 541-469-2072.
