Annual Slam'n Salmon Festival begins Friday

Festival winner in 2012 receives a check for catching the biggest Salmon. Nearly 500 anglers are expected to participate in this year's event.

Fishing enthusiasts from across the country will be competing at the 12th Annual Slam’n Salmon Ocean Fishing Derby starting Friday at the Port of Brookings-Harbor.

The derby, which has attracted participants from as far away as New York in previous years, is considered the largest fishing derby on the West Coast. An estimated 450 contestants will vie for the $6,000 grand prize for the biggest salmon, and a chance to win some of the $10,000 in cash prizes, such as rods and reels, crab pots and other fishing gear.
