The Wild Rivers Music Festival kicks off Brookings’ holiday weekend today (July 2) with a full day of music featuring headliner Hot Buttered Rum, Poor Man’s Whiskey, Achilles Wheel, The Accidentals and Second Bridge.

Great weather — sunshine and a predicted high of 68 — will greet hundreds of music fans expected to fill the grass amphitheater at Azalea Park. The festival, scheduled from noon to 9 p.m., includes local microbreweries and food vendors.

“We have a fantastic lineup this year with national acts that perform progressive bluegrass, folk rock, world music and indie pop,” said festival director Scott Graves. “The fun and energy is going to be off the charts.”

Sheriff sends bills to cities for 911 services

Curry County Sheriff John Ward mailed bills two months ago in an attempt to recoup the more realistic cost of 911 services his department offers to the numerous agencies and municipalities it serves.

And he’s only hit one snag — the city of Gold Beach — with whom discussions have been ongoing since mid-May.

Much of the 911 operations in Oregon are paid through fees charged to telephone users that all governmental agencies receive from the state. But they’re not enough to recoup true costs — making it that much harder for Curry County, which is suffering financially.
